This piece discusses the emergence of online fandom by looking closely at the Harry Potter book and movie series. These books were published and the first movies were released around the beginnings of the internet. Social networking, fan forums, and blogging allowed readers and movie buffs to discuss their favorite characters and connect to people from all over the world. Students may be too young to remember the release of these books, as they are second generation digital natives. Still, they can definitely relate to this fandom, as they grew up with social networking and blogging. Online fandom may be the only fandom students really know about.
