“Genghis Khan: The Mongolian with 16 Million Descendants” is an excellent article that blends science and genetics with the horrifying (but fascinating) history of Genghis Khan and the Mongol empire. The violent and implicitly sexual content of this article will excite students who like reading about warlords and the often violent histories of the world. But this article is not just a survey of Khan’s exploits, it is about DNA testing, and how scientists conducted a genetic study exploring the veracity of Khan’s legendary lineage. Both informative and fun, this makes for an excellent independent reading article. It could also (among other usages) supplement a unit on the middle ages, folklore and legend, and the contemporary usages of technology and science.
